Scout Lake Again

Another weekend, another trip to Scout Lake. When we saw the other car at the trailhead we were worried, but soon the other group passed us going the opposite direction. It's amazing to have a lake to yourself around Seattle in the summer.

K and I had a great time hiking & camping at scout lake, though the trail could use a little work. Yes, snow still reaches down to the lake in places.

We attempted to reach Hyas Lake in the evening... but the road was long, there was snow on the trail after a quarter mile, the rain discouraged us, it was very late, and everyone was tired.

After hiking a bit more than half way we turned back, camped near the car, and tried again in the daylight.

Scout Lake

Alex, Katherine, and I had a nice overnighter on Friday at Scout Lake with grandpa. It's a nice ~3 mile hike on a less frequented trail, yet there was still one other group camping at the lake already.

In the morning L & Rebecca joined us for a huckleberry pancake brunch.

Oh, and water was cold; comparable to the ocean.

L & I made it out camping on our own; after a 7 mile hike, all she had to say was: "Why didn't we stay at the lake all day?"

First of the season: Pratt Lake

Spencer & his two kids--Henry, and Oliver--went on an overnighter to Pratt Lake with K and I. The trip is ~6 miles each way, with 2100ft vertical rise and fall.

The view on this hike is awesome, after the first 3.5 miles, anyway. Nobody else was at the lake; we had the entire place to ourselves. There was a little snow on the trail above Olallie, but not as bad as it would have been if we had continued on to Rainbow Lake, where other hikers reported post-holing up to their waist.

All the kids did awesome. After the hike we stopped in at the Triple X for hamburgers & rootbeer. We've earned it, right?

Blue Skies

Day Hike : Snow Lake

Alex and I hiked to Snow Lake this afternoon, which appears to be the wildernessarea superhighway. We arrived at the trailhead in the afternoon and found the parking lot overflowing with cars. It is about 3.5 miles each way, and I carried Alex part of the way--maybe 1.5 miles--and the rest of the way we sang a hiking song: Step, Step, Hike. Hiking down the trail. Step, Step, Hike. ...

Overnight at Grand Lake (8/28)

We camped at Heart O' the Hills on Thursday, then Friday morning K & A hiked into the Olympic National Park backcountry to camp at Grand Lake, 4 miles each way with an elevation change of about 2000 ft.
